DOCTORAL STUDENT

Biography

Born and raised in China, I earned my B.A. degree in English and M.A. degree in Applied Linguistics. I have taught Mandarin at the University of Wrocław in Poland and in K-12 schools in the US, as well as here at the University of Illinois. As a first-generation college student from rural China and an avid language learner, I am passionate about seeking knowledge and helping students with their learning. My extensive experience as a Mandarin instructor has continually inspired my research.

I speak Mandarin, English, basic Polish, and basic Japanese. Outside of my studies, I enjoy playing badminton, hiking, and music.

Research Description

My research is situated at the intersection of prosody, second language (L2) acquisition, pedagogy, and machine learning. I am dedicated to discovering and describing new prosodic phenomena in world languages. For instance, one ongoing project involves detailing and analyzing the lexical tonal system of the Feixiang dialect, which is native to my hometown. Having served as a Mandarin instructor for many years, I am also keen on exploring how L2 Mandarin speakers acquire tones and intonation. Currently, my focus is on providing automatic, multifaceted feedback—visual, textual, and audio—that goes beyond mere scores of 'correct' or 'incorrect'.
