student awards ceremonyEach year, the EALC department offers several awards to graduate and undergraduate students.  Award recipients are recognized at an awards ceremony that is held near the end of the spring semester.

Ralph Tyler Year in Japan Study Abroad Scholarship

Provides an award of $4,000 each year to a student in YIJ program 

Kokichi Masuda Year in Japan Study Abroad Scholarship

Provides an award of  $1000 each year to a student in YIJ program

Ronald Toby Award

Provides one graduate student award annually in the department with the best research paper on an original topic concerning pre-twentieth century East Asia.

David Goodman Award

Provides support for undergraduate student awards in memory of Professor David G. Goodman.  Professor Goodman was a professor of Japanese literature and drama in the Department of EALC.  He was the author of numerous books and articles on modern Japanese theater and literature.

Internal Awards

EALC Summer Research Awards 

Provides financial support to EALC graduate students to pursue thesis or dissertation research over the summer. Information about the awards is made available by the DGS every year. Applications are submitted in the spring term to the department's office.

EALC awards for Conference Travel

Provides support for EALC graduate students to present at local, national or international conferences. Inquiries about travel grants should be directed to the Director of Graduate Studies, Prof. Chilin Shih.

In addition to the above, our graduate students are eligible for competitive funding by the school, college and university.
