The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the International House of Japan (I-House) are currently seeking three Summer Interns for short-term (not to exceed two weeks) internships during late July-August 2020 to coincide with the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The interns will support the ongoing activities of the 2020 U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Program (NichiBei Creative Artists) . JUSFC and the National Endowment for the Arts have selected five artistic teams for this program. Each team of artists from the United States and Japan are working on a collaborative artistic project that will be presented to the public in Tokyo during summer 2020. The internship is expected to be fast-paced, and will be based in Tokyo. This is an unpaid internship, and relocation to Tokyo is not covered. However, JUSFC and I-House will reimburse local transportation costs for daily commuting.
Internship duties will include but will not be limited to the following:
- Participating in internal meetings and providing administrative support for artists and staff.
- Serving as usher/traffic guide for theater performances in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
- Assisting artists with installations and performances as needed.
- Fielding phone calls and communications pertaining to performances and exhibitions.
- Taking photographs at exhibitions and performances, and writing short blog posts in English and/or in Japanese for social media.
Application Requirements:
- Current United States or Japanese undergraduate student.
- Demonstrated interest in Japan and U.S.-Japan artistic and cultural exchange. Ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with artists and program managers.
- Previous experience living or studying in Tokyo. Comfortable commuting via public transportation and taxis in Tokyo.
- Team player with the ability to follow directions and work independently, if required.
- Quick and organized learner with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent writing, problem-solving, organizational and communications skills, including telephone communication skills.
- Well-versed with Social Media, and with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) for PC and/or Mac.
Interns will report to the Arts Program Coordinator at the International House of Japan, and the Associate Executive Director of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, as appropriate.
